New writers

Daily Bread reflections arrive via email at 5:45am seven days a week. They are prepared by clergy and laity and offer a diverse range of thought and approaches to scripture.

You can sign up to receive emails by subscribing (at the bottom of every page of Saint Philip’s website) and you can browse through previous offerings by clicking here.

Two writers have recently joined the regular rota of authors.

Ben Garren

Chaplain Ben Garren serves college students and young adults in southern Arizona. His ministry is grounded in the community around the University of Arizona but includes the members of Beloved in the Desert and youth and young adult ministry across the diocese.

Before entering ordained ministry Ben worked in special education, homeless services, and LGBTQ+ political organizing. His studies and writings generally ask what happens when we take ideas common in community organizing and social justice work and bring them into dialogue with Christian tradition. Ben is glad for the opportunity to be in the midst of the reflection and conversation that occurs within the Saint Phillip's community.

Shirin McArthur

Shirin McArthur is a spiritual guide, retreat leader, writer, and editor who ponders the sacred through prayer, poetry, dance, photography, nature, and contemplation. She holds a Master of Divinity degree from Boston University School of Theology and a Certificate in Spiritual Guidance from the Shalem Institute in Washington, DC.

Shirin has led retreats for almost 30 years and serves on the faculty and leadership team of the Hesychia School for Spiritual Direction. She maintains an award-winning Prayerful Pondering blog which is part of the Christian Century network.

Raised in New Mexico, Shirin lives in Arizona and is a member of Saint Philip’s in the Hills, where her husband, The Rev’d Henry Hoffman, is retired affiliate clergy. You can learn more about Shirin on her website.
