ISLAM: A Concise Introduction, by Huston Smith. HarperCollins, 2001, 100 pp. (Call no. BP161.2. S57).
This is a short history of Islam by the world renowned scholar who wrote THE WORLD'S RELIGIONS (over two million copies sold, and also in our library). ISLAM is essentially Chapter VI of the larger and earlier work (Copyright 1991) with an October 2001 Introduction. Bill Moyers calls Huston Smith "One of our foremost interpreters of the world's religions." This is a good book with which to start in your attempt to understand the basics of Islam. You might find the Index notebook on the library table helpful in finding other works on Islam. (St. Philip's Library is in LaParroquia.)
