FINDING GOD IN THE QUESTIONS: A Personal Journey, by Dr. Timothy Johnson (Physician and Journalist). InterVarsity Press, 2004. 216 pp. (BT1103.J64 2004).
Everyone who has tuned into ABC "Good Morning America," with any regularity, knows Dr. Timothy Johnson, who has reported on health issues since 1975. He has also brought his knowledge as a physician to "World News Tonight," "Nightline," and "20/20." What his viewers may not know is that he was reared in a conservative denomination in the midwest, and graduated from seminary, before going to medical school. Now, on the faculty of Harvard Medical School, and a journalist, he addresses tough questions with the resources of science and theology.
Johnson has organized his material into three sections with ten sub-questions. Section one: "Does God Exist?" Section two: "What is God Like?" Section three: "What Difference Does It Make?" What makes this work especially moving is Johnson's life story that runs throughout the book.
The dean of Harvard Medical School says: "Dr. Tim Johnson, minister and physician, brilliantly analyzes his struggle with religious belief when juxtaposed to emerging scientific discoveries. The result is a deep humanitarian exposition of the significance of the teaching of Jesus, which provides a firm foundation for addressing life's challenges." (Jacket).
In chapter one the author states: "For many people, religion provides answers to the big questions of life. For others, the absolute claims of religion raise more questions than they answer. I have lived on both sides--and in some senses, I still do. My path of faith has wandered through both doubt and belief, often at the same time." (P. 15)
Although still appreciative of his conservative roots, in his excellent section on "Suggested Reading," in science and in religion, he offers a remarkable balance of classical titles, and current critical challenges to sacred traditions.
Dr. Sam Loyd, Rector, Trinity Church, Boston, comments: "If you've ever wondered whether Christian faith can hold up to the toughest questions of our days, this is the book for you. Dr. Timothy Johnson gives us a relentlessly honest exploration of the biggest questions of all: Can we believe in God in the face of the discoveries of science?" (Jacket.)
