LISTEN WITH THE HEART: Relationships and Hearing Loss, by Michael A. Harvey, DawnSignPress, 2001, 198 pp. (HV2545.H38)

Human relationships can be stretched to the limit so easily by the struggles of the hard of hearing (HOH) and their loved ones to “hear” and “understand” each other. The author says it is possible to repair fragile relationships by listening with the heart. Each party in the stressful situation has a responsibility.

Michael A. Harvey, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist in private practice, has taught at Boston University and Gallaudet University. He believes that exploring our relationships can be a powerful experience when seeking healing. Harvey shares “ten true stories of how parents, children and spouses are transformed by helping each other heal and grow. (Back cover).

The initiative, “Let’s Loop Tucson,” has already become “Let’s Loop Arizona, “ modeled after “Let’s Loop Michigan.” Installing a small wire around a public meeting room for use with an amplifier, a microphone and a hearing aid with a telecoil, is mandated by law in the U.K. There have been raving reports of “hearing again” in the St.Philip’s worship service through the recently installed inductive loop. Combining technology with the  human ability to listen with the heart, there is hope for stressful relationships and the loneliness of isolation caused by hearing loss.
