POSITION AVAILABLE:

DIRECTOR of MUSIC

St. Philip's In The Hills Episcopal Church, a large, highly diverse parish in Tucson Arizona, seeks a Director of Music to lead an exceptional program. This is a full-time position with competitive salary and benefits. The Director of Music provides the primary leadership for both the current musical mission of St Philip's In The Hills, and the creative vision for evolving new forms of musical expression in traditional and modern settings.

The music program at St. Philip's In The Hills is valued for its excellence, for the way liturgical music is understood to be integral to worship, and for its key role in attracting and retaining new members of all ages to the parish. The broader musical community of Tucson identifies St. Philip's In The Hills as a major cultural asset. Applicants are invited to view all parts of http://www.stphilipstucson.org for more information regarding the breadth of ministries that our music program supports.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE DIRECTOR OF MUSIC:

  • Prepare the choirs in weekly rehearsals and work as an integral member of the parish staff to plan and organize musical performance of liturgies including:
    • Sunday 7:45 AM Holy Eucharist Rite I - Instrumental music for the service provided by volunteers
    • Sunday 9:00 AM Holy Eucharist Rite II - St. Philip's Singers and organ
    • Sunday 11:15 AM Holy Eucharist Rite II - Canterbury Choir and organ

Music group sizes range in scale from a few instrumentalists to small orchestra comprised of paid professional musicians from the larger Tucson music community.
      • Comfy Space - Once a month St. Philip's offers a service specifically for those that wiggle and those that worship with them. - Music for these services is collaborated among the Director of Music, an Affiliated Priest and the Director of Children & Family Ministries.
  • Encourage and promote diverse forms of musical expression.
  • Recruit and empower those engaged in the music program. This includes the audition process for the choirs, and oversight of the selection of musicians who play during liturgies and concerts
  • Assist in the use of the many assets of the music program as a parish outreach ministry. For example, the Director of Music is responsible for choral training with children in the After School Music and Homework Program (ASMP), coordinating the music teacher selection process and serving on the ASMP Board.
  • Advise and oversee the activities of the Friends of Music, whose mission is "to enrich the musical experience" of the parish and community through events such as concerts, outreach, education, scholarships, commission, and support of special musical events at the church, ultimately enhancing both parish growth and the worship experience. This all-volunteer arm of the music program helps support other activities of the music program, including ASMP and students chosen to attend RSCM summer workshops.
  • As opportunities and resources emerge, expand the breadth of musical programming offered at St. Philip's in the Hills.
  • Administer the music budget and budget items related to the music program.
  • Delegate responsibilities to the Associate Director and be responsible for supervising that position.
